It's week five and something new for Matrix Team, it's all about triangles this week. There are some tips below.

Matrix quilt - Triangle side and corner blocks
Grid quilt - Week 3, 4 and 5 are all for blocks.
Keep on keeping on!!!
There isn't a huge amount to say this week other than ... Fab job everyone and just keep on sewing!
Team Matrix
If you're joining me in the Matrix quilt then it's all about triangles this week. They are simple blocks to make you just need to make sure you are lining up your triangles correctly before you sew.

Team Grid
If you are team grid then you are continuing all of the block making from last week. This is the week when all blocks will be finished, so you can really start playing around with layouts.

Team Grid - A few more blocks

Just a few more blocks and then you will have all of the blocks you need, yippee! If you get them all finished, then perhaps start playing around with your layout, you don't have to follow mine :)

Team Matrix - Triangles
So, all of your square blocks are done and now we can finish off the corner and side triangle blocks. Following the pattern and mixing and matching your low volume triangles they are simple blocks to make. There are some tips below if this is your first time sewing triangles to squares as you do need to match up the correct side.

Tips for sewing Triangles on the side triangle blocks
  • I always layout my block first to make sure I have the correct colours and my triangles are facing the correct way. Always making sure the long diagonal of the triangle is slopping the correct way.
  • Next I sew the squares in each column, for this block it is just the first column that has two squares.
  • To add the triangle to the top I place it on top making sure that the 90 degree square angle of the triangle is lined up with the top left-hand corner of the square below.

NOTE- You will see that a bit of the triangle hangs over the edge, this is GOOD and as it should be, it creates the diagonal seam allowance.
  • Once I have done the first column I repeat with the second one.
  • The final column is just one triangle so this goes to the right hand side of the second column. this time the 90 degree angle of the triangle lines up with the bottom right corner of the square (as we are adding to to the side).

Triangles on top (corner blocks)
The process is slightly different for the corner blocks, (made with the small top triangles), this time you need line up the long edge of the triangle with the top edge of the square and make sure that the point of the triangle is centred within the square.
This is the waterproof fabric I used for my original picnic quilt: PROFABRICS

Good luck with the block making :) And check back next week for week 6!
