Churn Dash Blocks - Strip piecing |
Videos and helpful resourcesThis week we are making the last of the blocks and you are a pro now, so enjoy using all of the skills you've learnt. There are five blocks this week as there is an extra centre block.
Block F1 is the standard Churn Dash blocks and blocks F2 and F3 rotate the strips to give a different design. |
Strip piecing is great for quickly making lots of blocks or units to sew together. A lot of the quilts you see that have hundreds of pieces may use strip piecing.
TIP: Double check your ¼" seam before you start. You may need to make it a scant ¼" as once the seam is pressed over you may find it comes up short. Have a practice first to make sure it's ok.
If sewing together more than two long strips, then sew each seam from the opposite end, this helps stop the finished piece from being wavy.

Chain Piecing
This week is a great time to have a go at chain piecing. Chain piecing is where you don't cut the thread between each seam when sewing pieces together.
I use chain piecing a lot. I will pair up the first two units (HST and striped piece) then sew the seams without breaking thread. I will then remove the piece and add the third unit to each row (HST) again without breaking thread. Have a go it really is fun and efficient. |
Remember to post your photos using the #signalquiltalong and tag me @paulasteel.quilts and Lisa @modernquiltclub so we can share in your achievements and spread the encouragement.
Remember to check back next week for week 8 and the completion of the top.
