Half Square Triangles really are one of my favourite blocks, they are simple to make and so versatile. This week we are making our HSTs two at a time. This pattern requires you to trim your HSTs, I know it's time consuming but it really does make a difference to the final quilt. The size of the squares won't leave you a lot to trim off (see tip below) so don't be over generous with your ¼" seam when sewing next to that line.
TIP - When sewing the line ¼" from the centre drawn line use a scant (slightly smaller) ¼" seam so you have a little extra to trim. |
Trimming HSTs
Trimming HSTs can seem a bit odd the first few times, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. If you are unsure watch the HST video and follow the tips in Lisa's newsletter. If you know you are going to be doing lots of HSTs going forward then I do love the combination of my Bloc-Loc ruler and rotating cutting mat. The Block-Loc ruler has a ridge which goes over the seam, so keeps the HST nice and steady. It's absolutely not necessary but I do love mine if I have a huge amount to do. |
The Shoo Fly Block
If you've loved making this block then you can make multiples and lay them out in an alternative grid to make a really effective simple quilt.

Remember to post your photos using the #signalquiltalong and tag me @paulasteel.quilts and Lisa @modernquiltclub so we can share in your achievements and spread the encouragement.
I hope you've enjoyed the first HSTs, they really are my favourite block. Remember to check back next week for week 4
