Aurifil Challenge - Three weightsAs part of being an Aurifil Artisan I get to take part in challenges, throughout the year. This gives me a chance to share my love of Aurifil with you and also to try new threads and challenge myself. This months challenge is using three weights in one project, which is a great challenge.
Obviously my go to weight for piecing and general sewing is 50wt, but I'm a huge fan of 28wt for some fab textured quilting. I'd also heard that using 80wt (super thin) whilst doing Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) helps to get flat seams, so that's got to be worth a try. |
The Challenge for February 2021
The challenge came around at a great point, the Fraktal Quilt Sew Along is just finishing up and I thought it would be a great idea to create an FPP pattern for the logo. It makes for a great quilt label, but I also figured it would be great as a super rainbow pouch and rainbows are very much welcome right now.

FPP
So, off I went to design the simple letters of the Fraktal logo and got them printed up on special Pattern Trace FPP Paper. I had heard that using 80wt for FPP could help to get really nice flat seams so figured I'd give that a go. I picked out a navy 80wt to go with my background fabric and a few extra colours for where the seam was not in navy. It worked really well, I did keep to the 50wt in the bobbin so it will only have reduced the seam by a smidge, but I was happy with that smidge. Quilting I absolutely adore using 28wt thread for machine quilting, if it's a small amount and I really want it to pop. It's been one of the highlights of being an Aurifil Artisan how much I've got to try new threads and 28wt definitely has a place in my heart now. I use 50wt in the bobbin and 28wt on top and then just quilt as normal, occasionally the tension needs a little nudge but my machine works well with it. I got together my rainbow of colours and then quilted simple ¼" lines either side of the logo. |
Piecing the pouch
I love a simple pouch and this is where my 50wt comes back in. I chose a navy to go with the background and then simply constructed a very simple pouch. It's quite long and would be perfect for knitting needles, but I don't knit so like many other pouches I make it doesn't yet have a purpose, but I love it and it's a reminder of the amazing Quilt Along. I hope you like my pouch, do check out my PDF Pattern shop if you'd like to make the original Fraktal quilt, pictured below. |
