Corner Blocks
You'll really see the block sizes grow this week, these corner blocks are a large part of the quilt top. You've already got the HSTs so sort them into coloured block piles and then add in the extra background squares and border strips. There is a choice for pressing seams, in the pattern I recommend pressing them flat, but you can also nest them. You will undoubtedly get a flatter finish if you press your seams flat but it can be harder to match them up (see tip below). If you prefer to nest your seams, as in press each row to a different side, then you might find it easier to match them up. As the main block is bordered with strips you can get away wit nesting seams as you will not have to continue thinking about seams beyond the borders. TIP - Use two pins for each seam. I know it seems a bit much but if you pop a pin just before and just after the seam then it isn't going anywhere. Have your pins pointing up towards the seam. |
Border Strips
You'll be adding a few border strips to this block at different points. I've always been tempted to sew on the border a little bit bigger and then trim down to size, but it doesn't really work very well. As you've already done your cutting your border strips should be the correct size, so, match up the centre points, the starting point and the end point and then pin. If you've got the start, centre and end secured you can ease in anywhere that is needed. Blocks I love these finished blocks, they are the foundation of the quilt top. Keep them nice and safe for another two weeks and then we'll be putting the quilt top together. |
Good luck with the big blocks, take your time and know that we are very nearly there :)

Our week 4 giveaway comes curtesy of my friend Amy from Coffee Rings Studio. I met Amy a few years ago, at one of Lisa's fabulous retreats, and we immediately bonded over our nerdy love of quilt maths and HSTs. Amy is about to launch her first quilting course 'Seams Perfect' and one lucky winner will get free access to this course.
What is the course? With Seams Perfect there's no need for mis-matched seams and uneven quilt blocks. You'll learn how to sew, press and match your patchwork seams in just a few hours. The course includes four video/slide tutorials plus an e-book version, PLUS bonus features: Amy's wish list - a PDF guide to her favourite tools and equipment and the 5 day challenge. You can find out more about Amy and sign up to her newsletter at www.https://coffeeandmaking.co.uk/ or find her on Instagram @coffeeringsstudio |
