Aurifil Challenge - Favourite ThreadIf you haven't heard, despite me shouting it from the roof tops I'm an Aurifil Artisan for 2020 and super excited about it! I'm a long time fan of Aurifil thread and have used it exclusively for a number of years.
What do I love about it?
As part of being an Aurifil Artisan I get to take part in challenges, throughout the year. This gives me a chance to share my love of Aurifil with you and also to try new threads and challenge myself. |
The Challenge for July - Favourite thread
This was an easy one pick for me, it's hands down 50wt thread. 50wt thread is the weight I turn to for the vast majority of my piecing and quilting, it's robust and thin so I get great flat seams and of course I can match it to the project I'm working on. My favourite shades for piecing are 2600, which is a light grey, and 2311, which is an off white cream.

Atomic Kitty Cushion
One of my very first patterns I designed was a cat called Atomic Kitty, FYI - I am an unapologetic mad cat lady! I still have the original Kitty Cushion, but he is looking a bit rough around the edges, from over use, so I figured it was time for an update. I'm also currently completely obsessed with the Ruby Star Society Speckled fabric which 'reads' like a solid but has these amazing paint like splashes all over. I honestly get nearly as excited choosing threads as I do choosing fabric. I start with the quilting thread and then the piecing thread. With 270 colours to choose from there is always a good match to be found. For the piecing I tend of use either off white/cream or a light grey. This time I went for the 50wt 2600 (light grey) which after white is definitely my most used thread colour. The Atomic Kitty pattern uses classic machine piecing and the option to Foundation Paper Piece (FPP) the eye row. 50wt therefore is great for both of these options and using light grey the thread just blends right in. |
Quilting Time
I really do enjoy quilting small projects, it gives you lots of opportunity to try new things and get quite intricate but without the weight of a large quilt to contend with. With some matching treads chosen I set out to echo some of the lines using a ¼" as a guide. I started with the nose and then worked my way out for the Peach face, breaking it down into areas. There was some thread burying to do, but with an easy thread needle it wasn't too bad, no where near as bad as a whole quilt! For the majority of Kitty I used thread that matched the fabric colour except for the black flashes at the side, which I decided to use contrasting yellow thread to add some pop. Thread used: Yellow / Green - 5015 (50 wt) Blue - 1148 (50 wt) Peach - 2215 (50 wt) Black - 2692 (50 wt) White - 2021 (50 wt) I hope you like my new Kitty version, do check out my PDF Pattern shop if you'd like to make one of your own and use the hashtag #atomickitty on Instagram |
